Introduction
PueTrak's Talent Mousepad
In the world of fast-paced gaming, high precision mice are almost essential. However, such mice are only as good as the surface underneath them. Without a quality mouse pad, these high performance mice are unable to reach their full potential. This is because without a properly conditioned surface the optical systems within the mouse will not be able to track properly, and any excess resistance caused from the mouse contacting the pad may cause unnecessary user-fatigue. For these reasons, the mouse pad must be both smooth and textured. In the end, it is a very fine balancing act. For if the surface is too rough the user will be unable to move the mouse freely; and if it is too smooth, the optics will be unable to track across the surface. “Gaming” mouse pads can be generally broken down into two classifications. These being 'High' and 'Low' sensitivity. High sensitivity mouse pads rely on harder, plastic surfaces – which, obviously, reduces friction. Low sensitivity pads usually rely on a cloth surface – thereby increasing resistance.
This segment of the peripheral marketplace is fairly crowded with over a dozen companies offering a variety of products at differing sizes and price points And given that the big name manufacturers like Razer, Corepad, and SteelSeries take much of the limelight, the best way to make a name for yourself is to offer something entirely unique and superior in some way (all at a competitive price). PureTrak is a relatively new mouse pad company, having been founded in 2007, whose first series of pads were released earlier this year. As gaming becomes an increasingly-lucrative market, quality mouse pads and other such peripherals will conceivably rise well into the $40 to $50 range; ultimately making them attractive to only the most serious players who are looking for yet another edge over their competition. In an effort to distinguish themselves from their competitors, PureTrak has set out on a mission to produce the highest quality product at an affordable price.
Cloth pads are arguably the most popular surfaces amongst gamers today. This is due, in part, to both their sheer size, as well as their resilience in the highly mobile realm of the LAN party. It is in this meme that we will examine PureTrak's Talent mouse pad. The Talent is a cloth surfaced, low sensitivity mouse pad and is the largest of the four products currently being offered by PureTrak.
